Pediatric Emergency Excellence: UCSF Resources for the Emergency Medicine Community

Supporting Local Pediatric Emergency Departments

UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals recognize that community EDs, EMS teams and ED providers are essential partners in pediatric health care throughout the region. Our emergency care teams in Oakland and San Francisco work collaboratively with pediatric specialists to provide comprehensive expertise for local providers.

24/7 Pediatric Emergency Consultation and Transfer Services

Our Pediatric Access Center connects emergency physicians directly with UCSF pediatric emergency physicians and specialists for immediate care consultation or to facilitate patient transfers. We provide comprehensive care across all pediatric specialties and offer ground and air transport teams for critically ill or injured children. Our commitment is to ensure every pediatric patient receives optimal care, regardless of location, by providing robust support to all emergency care providers serving children.

Pediatric Trauma Care Excellence and Knowledge Sharing

As Northern California's highest volume pediatric-only trauma facility and an American College of Surgeons-certified level 1 pediatric trauma center, UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland collaborates closely with community emergency departments to review cases, establish best practices and ensure appropriate follow-up care. We provide specialized education of pediatric injury management and host collaborative trauma morbidity and mortality case reviews to foster continuous improvement in pediatric trauma care.

Emergency Nursing Education and Skill Development

Our pediatric emergency nurse educators deliver on-site and virtual training to enhance the confidence and capabilities of emergency nursing professionals. Programs include annual competency trainings, hands-on procedural workshops, specialized pediatric care classes and shadowing opportunities with our pediatric emergency nurses. These initiatives ensure that emergency teams are equipped to address the unique needs of pediatric patients in your emergency department.

Dedicated Liaison Service for Pediatric Emergency Providers

Our liaison team connects emergency physicians treating children to the extensive resources available through UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals. Focused on the unique needs that arise in emergency care, this service offers personalized support in pediatric emergency care and facilitates seamless access to our comprehensive pediatric care network.

ImPACTS: Simulation-Based Emergency Readiness Assessment and Training

As part of our Pediatric Acute Care Through Simulation (ImPACTS) program, our specialists evaluate and strengthen emergency departments’ readiness in caring for acutely ill or injured children. Through high-fidelity simulation and targeted onsite training, we help identify opportunities for improvement and enhance team skills and knowledge in pediatric emergency care.

Leadership in Pediatric Emergency Preparedness

UCSF serves as a coordinating center for the Pediatric Pandemic Network, a national collaboration of children's hospitals working to ensure that communities nationwide can deliver exceptional care to young patients affected by natural disasters, public health emergencies and crisis situations.
